TORONTO HAS NEVER ASKED people to become something else. Instead, it has invited them to become part of something larger.

Walk a few blocks in almost any direction, and you’ll hear different languages, smell food from opposite ends of the world, pass places of worship representing countless faiths and discover neighbourhoods that proudly wear their heritage while continuing to evolve and carve out their own brand-new identities. That isn’t simply one of Toronto’s defining characteristics. It is its greatest strength.

This summer offered perhaps the best reminder of that. FIFA World Cup fever transformed streets across the city into spontaneous celebrations. Flags hung from balconies, patios overflowed and neighbourhoods erupted with joy as communities gathered not only to cheer for their own countries, but often for one another’s. It was a powerful reminder that while our differences shape us, they can also bring us together.

As we assembled this eighth edition of BEYOND, we realized that the same thread had quietly woven itself throughout these pages. From TIFF, one of the world’s great celebrations of international film, to the global influences shaping today’s design trends, to the enduring cultural roots of Roncesvalles, this issue reflects a city whose identity has never been singular. Toronto’s greatest stories are, and always have been, written by people arriving from somewhere else and making this place their own.

The renewed energy that swept through the city over the summer hasn’t been confined to its streets. We’ve begun to see it reflected in the housing market as well. While uncertainty challenged buyers and sellers for much of the past year, recent months have brought renewed confidence and encouraging momentum.
